The Foundation for the Developmentally Disabled in Naples, Florida held their annual fundraising event last week. The goal of this year’s event was to raise awareness and support for housing options for developmentally disabled adults. In this video we interviewed the Rochow family. What you don’t hear in the video is the heartbreaking detail of the health issues these parents are facing. This wonderful family welcomed us into their home, took us bowling, to work and to their baseball game to give yo a glimpse inside the lives of those families living in similar situations. They also attended and spoke at the annual event following the showing of this video.
The raw truth is that as parents like the Rochows’ age they face a cruel uncertainty about the future care and home of their children. Once they are gone who will care for their children? How will they be cared for? The issue of housing, options and future planning for these families and individuals is beyond critical. We have done other video projects on this topic for Residential Options of Florida (ROOF) and as part of the United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Southwest Florida project. There are options available but it is often a daunting task to navigate the system properly for parents who already feel overwhelmed. Help us raise awareness and share this message by sharing this video, this blog, their websites, etc.
